Abstract

The nanoHUB-U initiative is designed to help prepare seniors, graduate students and practicing engineers for the multidisciplinary research and technology environment of the 21st Century, through a unique curriculum:

(1) which is cutting-edge and yet broadly accessible to all science and engineering students,
(2) whose content is seamlessly integrated with simulation tools through the HUBzero platform. The content is packaged in short 20-minute lectures with quizzes for self-testing and are now being used even for on-campus classes in the "flipped mode." This talk will describe our current status and future directions along with our experience in teaching online students in 65 countries.

Bio

Supriyo Datta is the Thomas Duncan Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University. He is a fellow of the IEEE and the APS and was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering for his work on "quantum transport modeling in nanoscale electronic devices." His courses on nanoelectronics and quantum transport reflect his unique approach to the subject and have been featured on the nanoHUB since its inception, drawing over 75,000 viewers worldwide. In Spring 2012 he condensed and re-organized the original 2-semester course into nanoHUB-U's first online courses, Fundamentals of Nanoelectronics, Parts I and II, which are now available for free in self-paced format. Nearly a thousand students registered for the original offering of these online courses, over 30% of whom went on to complete the requirements and earn a certificate.
--------

Mark Lundstrom is the Don and Carol Scifres Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University where his teaching and research center on the physics, technology, and simulation of electronic devices. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, and a fellow of the IEEE, APS, and AAAS. Lundstrom was the founding director of the NSF-funded Network for Computational Nanotechnology, which has a mission of research, education, leadership, and service to the nation's National Nanotechnology Initiative. The NCN's science gateway, nanoHUB.org, now serves a global community of more than 250,000 users per year. The nanoHUB's nanoHUB-U is becoming the global resource for education in nanotechnology. Lundstrom currently directs a new NSF initiative, NEEDS – Nano-Engineered Electronic Devices and Systems. NEEDS is a Purdue, Berkeley, MIT, and Stanford partnership directed connecting material and device technologists to circuit and system designers.
