The New Logistics of Knowledge

Abstract
Just as technology has transformed businesses that deal in information delivery, such as journalism and book publishing, many experts also expect that electronic technologies will transform higher education. While agreeing, Gerry McCartney believes the digital transformation won't soon happen in the way many people think.
In a video created at Purdue, McCartney shows how quickly and dramatically consumer behavior is changing in the United States and the world, and how Purdue has responded to these changes at the present time.
Looking forward, McCartney predicts additional transformations resulting from five megatrends that can be viewed as either challenges or opportunities for higher education.
- An Always-on World
- Mobile Dominance
- Multiple Delivery Options
- Digital Scholarship
- Strategic Partnerships
Bio
Gerry McCartney serves as Purdue University's vice president for information technology and chief information officer responsible for overseeing the University's information technology organization. He also holds appointments as the Oesterle Professor of Information Technology and the Inaugural Director of the Innovation for Commercialization Center.
Under McCartney's leadership, Purdue has developed the nation's largest campus cyberinfrastructure for research, with five supercomputers listed in the internationally known Top500 list. This year's computer, Conte, is the fastest University computer in the country.
Also during his tenure, Purdue has developed some of the nation's most advanced learning and classroom technologies, including Signals and Hotseat. In addition, in 2010 McCartney provided oversight to a campus-wide restructuring of the information technology resources used by the nearly 15,000 faculty and staff on campus.
