Abstract

Scientists without a strong background in IT need user-friendly science gateways to run their experiments on different compute infrastructures using data from diverse types of storage services. A proper core science gateway framework can be used to hide the details of accessing these compute and storage services behind an experiment-focused user interface. WS-PGRADE/gUSE is a such a gateway framework, used widely in Europe. It enables the creation of complex workflows composed of jobs running in different types of compute infrastructures (including grids, clouds, desktop grids and supercomputers), operating on data coming from different storage services using diverse types of protocols (with the help of Data Avenue). As the large set of functionalities offered make the user interface of this core gateway detailed, different customization methodologies are provided for creating user-friendly interfaces above the core gateway. Within our talk we present the features of WS-PGRADE/gUSE along with some of its applications, and highlight some possible collaboration with the HUBzero platform.

Zoltan Farkas has been a research fellow at the Laboratory of the Parallel and Distributed Systems in the Computer and Automation Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences since 2002. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the Eotvos Lorand Science University of Budapest in 2004 and 2013, respectively. His research interests include grid computing, interoperability solutions, using standards and portal technologies. Within the Enabling Desktop Grids for e-Science (EDGeS) project he has created the core component of the grid interoperability solution, the 3G Bridge. Currently he is heading the portal team at MTA SZTAKI LPDS, and is contributing to a number of EU-funded projects (SCI-BUS, CloudSME). He is a coauthor in more than 30 scientific papers in journals and conference proceedings on grid computing.
