I got this error when trying to submit, “ ‘username’ not a member of group ‘submit’ “, Is there anything I need to change about the group configuration?

Regular users can only use submit to run applications that have been configured to be so run. See https://hubzero.org/documentation/1.2.0/installation/Setup.submit for more information. I believe appaccess.dat described toward the end of that document what handles this.
Being in group 'submit' bypasses the access checks and lets you try to submit any application, typically this is appropriate only for the site submit manager or perhaps trusted tool developers.
